Financial Controller

@ St Spyridon, we have been serving the spiritual and community needs of South East Sydney for over 60 years. Under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, we serve our community through Greek and Sunday Schools, Scripture, Fellowship, and many benevolent Missions to help those in need. We are most proud of St Spyridon College - an independent, co-educational K to 12 school providing a caring environment for approximately 800 students to excel and take their place in a rapidly changing world with confidence.

We are looking for an outstanding Financial Controller to join us in this newly created role. Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead and direct a small team and be responsible for the financial, commercial, and digital functions of the Parish and College.

The ideal candidate is a digital expert, willing to work hands-on in a fast-paced and dynamic environment with a focus on implementing best-of-breed, fit-for-purpose integrated cloud-based SaaS platforms that deliver measurable business benefits.

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Play a key strategic role in the organisational leadership team

  • Preparing month-end departmental reporting in Xero, including but not limited to Balance sheet reconciliations and variance analysis

  • Drive continuous business process improvement and streamline solutions through the utlisation of SaaS platforms such as Xero, ApprovalMax, Employment Hero, Weel and more.

  • Provide commercial insight and financial guidance to all team members across the various activities of the Parish and College

  • Prepare audit documentation and annual statutory accounts and liaise with external auditors on interim and year-end audits

  • Oversee payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable functions

  • Manage relationships with bankers, insurers and key external stakeholders

  • Prepare, review, interpret, and explain data trends and make recommendations in line with operational and financial requirements

  • Prepare the annual budget, produce quarterly re-forecast and provide commentary

  • Third-party compliance reporting, ensuring that financial activities comply with legislation, school operational plans, DGR and ACNC requirements, policies and procedures.

  • Ensure human resource practices conform to current standards and legislation and that awards and conditions are met for all staff.

  • Manage tax compliance, including BAS returns

  • Manage DGR compliance of multiple public funds and ACNC reporting obligations

About You:

  • CA/CPA qualified with a tertiary qualification in accounting and finance having 5+ years experience in a similar role

  • Experience utilising best of breed, fit for purpose integrated cloud-based SaaS platforms (Xero, Employment Hero, ApprovalMax, Zapier etc) that deliver measurable business process improvements

  • Experience with DGR endorsements, ACNC organisations or the Independent School sector is desired, but not essential

  • A natural problem solver, you are inquisitive and analytical with a knack of identifying issues and initiating appropriate action to reach resolution

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to set priorities to meet critical deadlines

  • Exceptional interpersonal and business communication skills

  • Proactive achiever with keen eye for detail
